TCR ends exemption for Audi TT

The TCR International Series organisation has ended the exemption granted for Liqui Moly Team Engstler to run the Audi TT in the championship.

“The exemption was granted with the spirit to support our new series and also to allow Audi Sport customer racing to collect information about the necessary requirements for a successful technical platform, which could fit to the TCR regulations,” said Marcello Lotti, head of TCR.

Nicki Thiim made an appearance for Liqui Moly Team Engstler at Portimao and immediately showed the pace of the Audi by claiming pole and the race one victory.

”In the light of the latest results, we believe that both these aims have been successfully achieved. Therefore, together with the team and Audi Sport customer racing we have decided to end this exemption; also in the respect of the other competitors that have accepted the situation with a true sporting spirit,” said Lotti.

The team are yet to confirm which car they are to replace the Audi TT with, but information to TouringCarTimes states that they are rushing to complete a pair of Volkswagen Golfs before the last half of the season. The team will field a pair of SEAT León Racers this weekend for Lorenzo Veglia and Mikhail Grachev as in Portimao.
