Four race event after A1GP cancellation
With the A1GP Series officially cancelling their first appearance next weekend at what was to be the Nikon Super GP – the V8 Supercar Series has extended it’s schedule to cover for the flagging series.
Originally planned for two 200km races, the weekend will see four 150km races instead.
V8 Supercars chairman, Tony Cochrane, said of the change:
“V8 Supercars will step up with four 150km races, in a joint celebration of Q150, which is the longest we have raced at this event and the longest distance we will race all year this year outside of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.”
With another 200km added to the racing miles this weekend, the teams will need to prepare for a much different event than they expected – with the Bathurst 1000km race only just completed last week.
The V8 Supercar races at Surfers Paradise have generally supported the US based Champcar, and most recently Indycar Series – but with the series unable to return, A1GP was brought in to fill the void – but now the contract with A1GP has been terminated, as the championship has now gone into liquidation.
It remains to be seen what the future of the Surfers Paradise event holds, with the likelihood that it will just become a standard round of the V8 Supercar Series.
