Whincup marches towards title
Jamie Whincup continued his pursuit of securing back-to-back V8 Supercar Championship titles with victory in race one at the Barbagallo Raceway today.
Whincup’s TeamVodafone team mate Craig Lowndes started from pole position, but was passed by Whincup before the pack reached turn one.
Will Davison, Whincup’s only realistic title challenger, began from fourth on the grid but eventually crossed the line in fifth.
Kelly Racing enjoyed their second podium in as many race meetings, with Todd Kelly claiming second place.
Bundaberg Red Racing’s David Reynolds opted for the sprint tyre for the entire race, and was looking set for a second place finish until late on when wheel problems robbed him of a podium finish.
Mark Winterbottom claimed the final step of the podium in the Ford Performance Racing FG Falcon.
Whincup leads the Championship standings on 3,055-points, and a 161-point advantage over the chasing Will Davison.
