Perfect start for Whincup with Race 2 win
Jamie Whincup has ensured a perfect start to the season, by securing victory in race two at the Yas Marina circuit. Pole sitter Mark Winterbottom couldn’t convert his qualifying pace into a win, but continues to shine for Ford.
Garth Tander retired with technical issues whilst leading, meaning HRT’s season starts horribly, with the best finishing position going to Will Davison today of 14th.
Winterbottom had qualified on pole in his Ford Performance Racing Ford Falcon, but was passed at the start by Team Vodafone’s Jamie Whincup – and from there, the reigning champion was unstoppable.
‘Frosty’ finished second, with Stone Brothers Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen claiming a podium finish for the team, which has been showing far improved pace in practice this weekend.
Rick Kelly converted his excellent starting position into a fourth place finish in the Jack Daniels Kelly Racing entry, whilst Whincup’s team mate Craig Lowndes rounded out the top 5.
Rick’s brother (and team mate) Todd Kelly unfortunately was caught up in a first lap kerfuffle, and joined the list of retiree’s, as well as former champion Garth Tander – completing a weekend the Holden Racing Team would rather forget.
The next race is next weekend in Bahrain, as the V8 Supercars kick-off with a succession of ‘off-shore’ events.
