Courtney wins second race as Whincup fails to finish

James Courtney has won the second round at Ipswich, whilst Jamie Whincup suffers a mechanical retirement.

Courtney now closes to within 24 points of Whincup in the championship.

Whincup had started from pole, but after a safetycar period, Courtney got the better of the TeamVodafone driver and took the lead.

Soon after, Whincup retired with a broken rocker in the engine.

Tander had a better finish than yesterday, taking second in the race and now moves up to fourth in the championship.

Shane van Gisbergen repeats a third place finish in the SP Tools Racing Ford, and has moved up to third in the championship.

Speaking to V8 Supercars, Courtney said:
“I didn’t adjust one click on any of the roll bars; I didn’t adjust one piece of brake balance. I just drove the thing; it was flawless. I didn’t have to worry about conserving anything. It was exactly what I wanted and when a car is like that you don’t need to worry about anything because it looks after itself.”
