BMW eyes V8 Supercars entry

BMW has confirmed discussions with the V8 Supercars organizers for a possible entry. The German manufacturer is interested in running the new DTM specification car in the future.
“In light of the announcement of our re-entry to the DTM in Europe, if we could race that class of vehicle then we would look very favourably on a proposal for BMW to enter [V8 Supercars],” said a BMW spokesman to Autosport.

V8 Supercars are set to introduce changed regulations for 2012, just as DTM. But unless the new Australian rules are closely matched to the new DTM regulations, BMW are not interested.

“We would not look at anything that was specific to this market, but we would look very warmly at a racing class that is compatible with cars racing overseas,” said the BMW spokesman.

V8 Supercars organizers have confirmed discussions with BMW for the future regulations.

“We would love a brand like BMW to be involved. We’re very open-minded to working with them and trying to find some common ground. We’re talking to quite a few manufacturers at the moment and we are trying to be as accommodating as we humanly can,” said V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane.

The main goal for V8 Supercars with the new regulations, called “Car of the Future”, is to reduce costs and open up for more manufacturers.
