Dumbrell takes first career win

Paul Dumbrell has won his first V8 Supercars race of his career, just one week after his first podium finish, ahead of reigning champion Jamie Whincup.

Whincup had started from pole alongside Dumbrell, though the first start had to be red flagged after a heavy crash for HRT’s Garth Tander.

Dumbrell and Tander had made contact near the start, and a subsequent tyre failure took Tander out of the race causing a red flag and a full restart, sans Tander of course.

Whincup held on to the lead until the pit stop sequence was completed. Dumbrell had pitted earlier than Whincup and had made better time and took the lead.

Although Whincup was able to close down on Dumbrell near the end, he wasn’t able to get past on what was now a timed race, and Dumbrell went on to take his and Rod Nash Racing’s first V8 Supercars victory.

With James Courtney finishing fourth, the points gap diminishes just slightly, with Courtney’s lead now 32 points ahead of the TeamVodafone driver.
