Bright targeting title after strong showing

Jason Bright is hoping to challenge for the title after just missing out on victory at the Yas Marina circuit today.

Bright, 37, whose last victory was in Bahrain in 2006 with Ford Performance Racing, qualified in seventh place in both races this weekend at Abu Dhabi, and fought hard with James Courtney in the closing stages of race two.

Though a broken steering seal put him out of race one early on, Bright believes the performance of the car is there, and isn’t ruling out a challenge for the title.

“In today’s race the car was magic and I’m sure we can go after a championship this year,” said Bright.

“You definitely use your tyres up passing cars and firing it down the inside of people under brakes! I thought we’d be able to pull away from Courtney once we were past but we never got the chance to take our own racing line because we were side-by-side the whole time. It was something I really enjoyed. The racing was awesome; I don’t think we touched once.”

The lack of contact is in difference to Courtney’s manoeuvre yesterday with Bright’s team-mate Jason Bargwanna. After which, Courtney was docked 50 points so now lies 12th in the championship after his victory instead of fifth.

Jamie Whincup leads the standings going to next month’s round at Adelaide, with Alex Davison and Shane van Gisbergen’s consistent run for Stone Brothers Racing putting them in 2nd and 3rd in the drivers’ standings, and SBR in the lead of the teams’ championship.
