Dan Wheldon joins James Courtney for GC600
Indianapolis 500 and former IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon will join James Courtney at the Gold Coast 600 in the latest driver announcement for the special event.
The 33-year-old British driver won the IndyCar series in 2005 whilst racing with Michael Andretti’s team, and then spent three years with Ganassi Racing, finishing in the top four of the drivers standings in every year.
This year, Wheldon has won the only IndyCar race he’s taken part in, the famous Indianapolis 500 which he won for a second time in his career, this time with former team-mate Bryan Herta’s new team.
Wheldon is looking forward to the new challenge of driving a V8 Supercar at Surfers Paradise, sharing a car with reigning champion James Courtney – with former IndyCar rival Ryan Briscoe pairing up in the No.2 HRT Commodore with Garth Tander.
“I was devastated not to do the event last year and I am obviously thrilled to be invited by the Toll Holden Racing Team to drive with James (Courtney) at October’s event,” said Wheldon.
“I have been to the Gold Coast before in an Indycar and the atmosphere and crowd that surround the entire event is phenomenal.”
“I will be one of the few drivers who has not been in one of these cars before so it will be important to get as much as possible out of the test day on the Wednesday (of race week).”
