Jamie Whincup fastest in Albert Park qualifying

Triple Eight’s Jamie Whincup was fastest of all in qualifying for the non-championship round of the V8 Supercars Championship at Albert Park, which is supporting the opening round of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship this weekend.

The 29-year-old went around the circuit with a time of 1:55.081 to claim pole for Friday’s Qualifying Race ahead of Mark Winterbottom’s Ford Performance Racing Falcon.

Shane Van Gisbergen in the Stone Brothers Racing Ford will line-up third ahead of the second FPR Falcon of Championship leader Will Davison. Craig Lowndes was fifth and the second highest placed Holden in his Triple Eight Commodore.

Greg Murphy and Jonathon Webb will compete this weekend in different cars than they ran in the first race at Adelaide. Murphy’s Kelly Racing team is fielding one of their Development Series cars for the New Zealander, who severely damaged his car in the second qualifying session two weeks ago, running into the back of Webb.

Webb similarly will be running in a ex-Paul Morris Motorsport car which was used in the Development Series in 2011, whilst the Tekno Autosports team attempts to repair Webb’s new Triple Eight-built car for the next round at Symmons Plains.
