Whincup wins second Symmons Plains race despite spin
Jamie Whincup won the second race at Symmons Plains despite an early spin. The TeamVodafone driver started fifth, climbed a couple of positions and dropped back to fifth again after his spin, but fought his way back in to the lead before the race was over.
“We had a tough weekend all in all so to come away with that I’m a little bit shocked,” said Whincup.
“It’s crazy how this sport works. Nothing went right all weekend and we walk away with a third and a win. I don’t want to dwell on the negatives but we’ll improve on that. Lucky enough in the spin I nailed it and spun it around!” said Whincup.
Shane van Gisbergen claimed second position ahead of a disappointed Will Davison who suffered from brake problems. The FPR driver got in to the lead after the first pit stop and fought closely with Craig Lowndes. The both collided a bit later in to the race, resulting in a retirement for Lowndes and increasing brake problems for Davison, who ultimately finished third.
“It was a shame to have a touch with Lowndes. I knew he was behind me, I didn’t really know where he was. I just felt the hit and that was that,” said Davison.
Mark Winterbottom crossed the line as fifth ahead of Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso. James Courtney, Jonathon Webb and Todd Kelly rounded off the top ten. Former DTM driver Alexandre Prémat finished 13th from 11th on the grid.
