Two from two for Whincup at Yas Marina

Jamie Whincup took a pair of wins at the Abu Dhabi circuit today, passing Ford Performance Racing’s Will Davison at the start of race two to secure his second win of the day.

In the short 12 lap sprint, Whincup was able to pull out a X second lead over Davison to further extend his lead in the drivers’ championship over Mark Winterbottom.

Winterbottom was able to work his way forward to finish in fourth place to minimise the damage, passing the Stone Brothers Racing Ford Falcon of Lee Holdsworth for fourth place on the second lap.

The top three of Whincup, Davison and van Gisbergen broke away in the early stages, but as the race drew on, van Gisbergen fell back into the clutches of Winterbottom, but it was too late for the Melbourne driver to get past.

Davison finished just under three seconds behind Whincip, whilst van Gisbergen and Winterbottom were fighting a further six seconds behind.

Garth Tander worked his way up to fifth place in the Holden Racing Team Commodore and finished ahead of Tim Slade’s SBR Ford, with David Reynolds seventh in the third of FPR’s Ford Falcons.

SBR’s Lee Holdsworth, Tekno Autosport’s Jonathon Webb and Brad Jones Racing’s Fabian Coulthard rounded out the top ten, with Whincup’s Triple Eight team-mate Craig Lowndes just outside the top ten in 11th.
