Fourth straight victory for Jamie Whincup
Jamie Whincup won his fourth straight V8 Supercars race at Winton today, with team mate Craig Lowndes charging from 15th on the grid to second, securing a Triple 8 one-two.
“It was a tough race strategy-wise, everyone was going everywhere at the start. Halfway through the race I asked for an update as to what was going on because I had no idea, I just had my head down and was pushing hard. It all worked itself out and we were able to bring it home. Every point is vital now,” said Whincup.
The race began with an incident between Jason Bright, James Courtney and Rick Kelly, forcing the safety car out on track.
Lee Holdsworth climbed to sixth on the grid to take his first podium finish for Stone Brothers ahead of pole sitter Mark Winterbottom in fourth. Winterbottom was third until the very last lap when he ran light on fuel.
“I knew Winterbottom was saving fuel so I was trying to get close enough in the braking zones. As I came out of the last corner I got a bit of a side draft and got beside him for the last podium spot. I’m stoked, we’ve been waiting for a podium all year!” said Holdsworth.
James Moffatt came home fifth ahead of Tim Slade and Jonathon Webb. Garth Tander, MIchael Patrizi and Tony d’Alberto rounded off the top ten.
Whincup’s victory means that the Holden driver has got a 326 point gap to Winterbottom, making it likely for the Holden driver to secure the title in the second race at Winton.
