Shane van Gisbergen claims first pole of 2013

Shane Van Gisbergen has claimed the first pole position of the 2013 V8 Supercars ahead of the Clipsal 500 weekend in Adelaide. The Holden driver beat Ford driver Mark Winterbottom with a mere 0.0480 seconds.

Legal controversy could stop Van Gisbergen from starting from pole position and racing at all this weekend. Van Gisbergen left Stone Brothers Racing (SBR) late last year and has, according to SBR, signed a contract which includes a non-compete clause for the entire 2013 season. Information suggests that SBR is about to launch a race-eve court challenge against Van Gisbergen which could prevent him from racing.

Four Holdens occupied positions three to six with Craig Lowndes in third, Fabian Coulthard in fourth, Jamie Whincup in fifth and Jonathon Webb in sixth.

Will Davison was the second Ford drive in seventh with his Pepsi Max Crew FPR Falcon, 0.2963 seconds from pole position.

Alexandre Premat claimed eighth on the grid ahead of James Courtney and Scott McLaughlin.

Best Nissan driver was Michael Caruso in 13th position, just under eight tenths from pole. Best Mercedes driver was Lee Holdsworth in 23rd position, right ahead of manufacturer colleague Tim Slade.
