Whincup: “We dedicate our lives to sport, and this is what for”
Jamie Whincup secured his fifth V8 Supercars title in the season finale on the streets of Sydney and the 30-year-old was emotional after the weekend.
”Number five – I can’t believe it. It’s a massive deal. We dedicate our lives to sport and this is what for,” said Whincup.
The Triple Eight Racing Engineering driver had an impressive 2013 season with eleven victories and 21 podium finishes.
”It’s just a huge team effort. It’s been a tough year with this new car. And a big thanks goes to Lowndesy. It’s just as much his as it is mine. We worked really hard together on these cars and to get the 1-2, it couldn’t be any better,” said Whincup.
Team mate Craig Lowndes became the sole title rival in the very last race of the season, but with a very small chance of beating Whincup. There was no drama in the last race though as Whincup, just as in the first race, was fighting for the lead while Lowndes was further down the field.
”I know we only had to finish 18th but I just couldn’t help myself from having a crack,” said Whincup.
Whincup’s first V8 Supercars title came in 2008, followed by another three in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
”I live for this stuff. I love it. And to do it in the first year of Car of the Future, on an even platform, it means even more,” said Whincup.
