New leader Stefano Comini eager to fight for win tomorrow
Stefano Comini looked very strong in the first sector of the opening lap in Q2 at Valencia, Spain, but in the end found himself in third, just a flash slower than Target Competition team-mate Andrea Belicchi.
The Swiss driver is under no intention to be cautious, though: “I think I will have to attack, hopefully I will be able to pass both Pepe (Oriola) and Andrea (Belicchi) before the second corner!,” said the SEAT driver. “It is very difficult to overtake at the Ricardo Tormo, and it will be a very tough race for the tyres. We tried race simulations yesterday and today, and it was really hard for me.”
Comini is happy with the outcome of the qualifying session: “Third place for me is perfect, I made a small mistake in my best lap but I think that the car was really fast. There was no agreement between Andrea (Belicchi) and me to give each other slipstream, we just found ourselves behind Oriola and kept on pushing.”
Like his SEAT colleagues, the Target Competition driver is convinced Morbidelli was targeting tenth to claim the reversed grid pole position: “I think Gianni did a great job to take pole position for Race 2, it’s a good strategy for the championship, but if I have to think about me then third is good for both Race 1 and Race 2.”
Comini stepped up into the lead of the championship, courtesy of the three points scored for his third place in qualifying, and now has a single point advantage over former leader Morbidelli.
