Stefano Comini leaves Valencia with championship lead

Stefano Comini strengthened his championship lead by becoming the first driver to win two races this season. The Swiss managed to avoid the first corner accident, after which he kept on pushing for the entire race.

“I guess we can say that the SEAT derby between Target Competition and Craft Bamboo Lukoil ended 1-1,” joked the championship leader. “The first race was not good, I had a problem at the start, just like my team-mates, so I used launch control for the first time in Race 2, and it was much better.”

The Target Competition driver told the tale of the start of the second race from his point of view: “The Race 2 crash was a good thing for me, I think I was the only one to keep the throttle to the floor and that was the right thing to do, it paid off. After the Safety Car I tried to rebuild the gap and I did so, it was perfect.”

Comini also played down the ‘luck factor’, taking all the merits for himself, the car and the team, as he is convinced that he had enough pace to win even without that accident: “It is true that the incidents and then the fights behind me helped me, but it took a lot of courage to go flat out at the start in that situation. Also, my pace was very good, and the car has the potential to win regardless of these things. In fact, I was consistent for the entire race, and that shows how good the car was today.”

Comini leaves Valencia with a 15-points advantage over WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli, after the Italian was promoted to third due to Andrea Belicchi’s exclusion from the second race.
