Adam Morgan dominates final race at Thruxton

Ciceley Racing’s Adam Morgan turned in a commanding performance to win a safety-car affected final race at Thruxton, and secure his first BTCC win on the road.

Morgan made a great start from pole position to gradually build a gap over Triple Eight Racing’s Andrew Jordan and West Surrey Racing’s Sam Tordoff, before the race was neutralised on lap eight following an off for Warren Scott.

And after four laps behind the safety car, Morgan once again established a gap to come come 1.452 seconds ahead of Jordan, with Tordoff taking his first podium for his new team in third. The former Ginetta Supercup champion now has two BTCC wins to his name, following the first at Brands Hatch last season which came after stewards disqualified Jason Plato.

Team BMR’s Colin Turkington continued to rack up the points in fourth ahead of series leader Gordon Shedden, the Honda Racing Team man rounding off a very productive day in fifth.

Shedden’s team-mate Matt Neal climbed to sixth from the back of the grid, with Jason Plato, Aron Smith, Josh Cook and Tom Ingram completing the top 10.

It was a quiet encounter by race three standards, with the majority of the drama taking place in the mid-pack as the leading drivers held station.

The Power Maxed Racing pair of Cook and Dave Newsham clashed on lap three, before both Shedden and Plato passed the fading Rob Collard, who eventually fell to 14th.

Team BMR’s Scott had a heavy impact with the tyres on lap eight to end a tough day, before Cook continued his fearless driving after the safety car, passing Collard in a firm move at Allard.

Triple Eight Racing’s Jack Goff had a wild moment at Church on lap 16 which dropped him out of the top 10, before Neal passed Plato at the same spot on the penultimate tour.

But up front, Morgan was completely unflustered as he brought the car home for a popular win.

The championship now takes a four-week break before the next round at Oulton Park on June 6 and 7.
