Gianni Morbidelli disappointed with tough weekend

Gianni Morbidelli lost his Race 1 win due to a post-race penalty imposed by the stewards, which left him out of the points. In the second race, an accident triggered by a brake failure put an end to a tough weekend.

“It’s been a very hard weekend,” admitted the Italian to TouringCarTimes. “The car was very good and the team did a great job, but unfortunately things didn’t go our way and I come away with no points this Sunday.”

The WestCoast Racing driver believes that the championship battle is now compromised, as he sits 39 points behind new leader Pepe Oriola: “Had I kept today’s win it would have been a different story, but with such a big gap it’s going to be very difficult. I will not give up until the last yard, but things are difficult as the top drivers are all very consistent, and it will be tough to make up for such a huge gap.”

Speaking of the penalty, the Italian was disappointed: “I think the drive through was a little bit too hard. Of course I did make contact with other cars, but I also have some pretty clear marks on mine and punishing me for things I rate as part of motorsport was a bit too hard from my point of view. Nevertheless, it’s the stewards’ decision and one has to accept it.”

Morbidelli scored eleven points in the last two events, dropping down from the championship lead to fourth.
