Colin Turkington wins final race at Silverstone

Team BMR’s Colin Turkington took a dominant victory in the final race at Silverstone, heading home the West Surrey Racing pair of Rob Collard and Sam Tordoff, ensuring five drivers head into the final weekend at Brands Hatch with a mathematical chance of the title.

Turkington passed Collard at Brooklands on lap two before a four-lap safety car period following a hefty shunt between Dan Welch and Hunter Abbott.

The reigning champion extended his lead comfortably after the restart, with the duelling pair of Collard and Tordoff just over two seconds behind. Collard allowed Tordoff to pass on lap 19 to try and close down Turkington, but when he couldn’t do so, he allowed his team-mate to repass on the last lap.

Just off the podium, Team BMR’s Jason Plato headed home title rivals Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal in the two Honda Yuasa Racing Civic Type-Rs to slightly close the gap in the standings.

Plato trails Shedden by 23 points going into Brands Hatch, with Turkington 32 behind and Neal 37. The final driver in with a mathematical chance, Triple Eight Racing’s Andrew Jordan, is 64 behind with 67 still on the table after finishing 12th.

Rounding out the top 10 were Mat Jackson, who charged through from the back of the grid, Adam Morgan, poleman James Cole and Aiden Moffat, who had contact with Tom Ingram on several occasions.

Collard took the lead from Cole at the start before the Motorbase Performance man ran wide at Becketts and allowed Turkington to pass. Ingram and Moffat had their first round of contact at Luffield before the safety car was deployed, after Welch was seemingly tapped into a spin at Becketts and Abbott couldn’t avoid him, causing significant damage to the front end of his Audi A4.

After the restart, Tordoff and Collard made brief contact at Brooklands on lap nine before Plato tapped Cole at Luffield and crept by into fourth. Cole was pushed out high and wide, losing several more positions in the process.

West Surrey Racing’s Andy Priaulx then had heavy contact with Triple Eight Racing’s Jack Goff at Luffield, causing the MG to pit, before the BMW driver was given a black flag on lap 13 and a drive-through penalty for exceeding track limits on lap 18.

Oblivious to the chaos behind him, Turkington stroked it home to ensure he still has a chance of retaining his title on finals weekend at Brands Hatch.
