Jordi Gené concedes title chances are out of his control
Jordi Gené came second in yesterday’s free practice session in Macau. The Spaniard, who is in with an outside shot at the TCR International Series title, is happy with the start of his weekend.
“I was quite comfortable in the car, although it’s not perfect yet,” said the Craft-Bamboo Lukoil driver to TouringCarTimes. “My feeling is that none of us, except probably Rob Huff, was pushing to his maximum, so it’s still early to say what the weekend will be like.”
Gené is ready to work on his SEAT León to improve it: “There is obviously still a margin with the car as well. The thing with Macau is that every time you go out on track it changes, so the tweaks you think were good the day before may prove wrong the day after. It’s a guessing game to that respect, you have to take the conditions into consideration and try to get the best out of the car.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, Gené knows something special needs to happen if he is to win the title: “The way things are the chances to win the title are not in my hands anymore. I know I have to perform well and make sure I do everything I can to stay in the hunt, but I also need some luck. It’s going to be tough but I am prepared to work hard and get some good results, and then I’ll have to see what Lady Luck brings to me.”
Speaking of qualifying, the Spaniard says the strategy is quite simple: “You need to push hard and take risks, the grid position is very important here. With all the accidents, yellow and red flags you can encounter en route to your quick lap, you have to think as if every lap was the last before the flag. There is no rest here.”
Gené is 34 points behind championship leader Stefano Comini.
