Rob Huff: “Objective achieved” with win #8 in Macau
Rob Huff claimed his eighth career victory at the Guia Race of Macau in Race 1 today, fighting side-by-side through Turn 1 between title rivals Jordi Gené and Stefano Comini, but was unable to convert pole in Race 2 after he was involved in the massive pile-up at the start.
Huff’s win in Race 1 means he now ties with Michael Rutter for the number of total victories at the Circuito Da Guia, making a one-off outing in the TCR International Series before the WTCC season finale at Qatar later in the week.
“That’s what we wanted all weekend,” said Huff to TouringCarTimes. “Obviously I’m a bit disappointed about Race 2, but I’m very pleased about the weekend as a whole.
“WestCoast, JAS, AG Group and everyone involved has done a great job this weekend and it’s good for the championship as well as it just shows the level that’s needed to win in a World Touring Car around here.”
After a slow start, Huff was surrounded by Gené and Comini’s SEATs heading into the first corner, but Huff pulled out ahead on the way into Mandarin to lead ahead of Gené, who then switched to defend against Comini.
“If you’re going in there three-cars wide and I’m in the middle, I’m in the right place, as the inside guy has got to turn tight and no one wants to go around the outside of two cars through Mandarin, so I knew I had the best opportunity there and took as risk and it paid off.”
The 2012 WTCC champion remarked on the new Series, which crowned its first champion Stefano Comini in Race 2, when the Swiss driver took the lead when Huff and Craft-Bamboo’s Jordi Gené crashed into the first corner.
“The cars are good, the championship is good, I think it’s definitely a great stepping stone before moving into World Touring Cars, and I’m pleased to be back here in my second home and winning again in Macau.”
