Jordi Gené: “Not finishing the race hurts more than broken rib”

Craft-Bamboo Lukoil’s Jordi Gené was leading the Guia Race 2.0T in Macau, although for just a few metres, before a touch with WestCoast Racing’s Rob Huff prompted a huge 11-car crash at Reservoir, the legendary track’s first corner.

The Spaniard came off worst in the accident, with a broken rib and a fine as well as a heavily damaged car. Despite this, the Craft-Bamboo Lukoil driver says the worst thing about the incident is not being able to have a shot at a Macau Guia Race win.

“I was leading, so it’s a huge shame,” said Gené to TouringCarTimes. “The rib hurts a lot, but not having been able to finish the race is even more painful. I think Rob (Huff) was just in the wrong place, which I didn’t expect.”

The Spaniard is adamant he could have won had he not been involved in the crash: “I was ahead of him, and it’s very hard to overtake in Macau. I would have defended and come out with a win, so I am really disappointed, I wanted the win so much.”

Gené also talked about the first race: “I was trying to keep Stefano Comini and (team-mate) Pepe (Oriola) behind to keep my title hopes alive and, although I did that, it just wasn’t enough for me.”

All in all the Spaniard was philosophical about the outcome of his weekend: “This is Macau, so sometimes things like these can happen, you can’t predict anything. I was on the wrong side of luck this time around, hopefully I next year will be better!”
