Mark Winterbottom claims first 2016 win ahead of Scott McLaughlin

Mark Winterbottom claimed his first V8 Supercars win of 2016 ahead of a charging Scott McLaughlin in the final race of the weekend at Perth.

The Ford driver started third but dropped down the order in the first part of the race. A two-stop strategy saw him gaining as the race progressed and was in the lead in the closing stages of the race on a 30-lap run after his final pit-stop.

Volvo driver McLaughlin and yesterday’s winner Craig Lowndes gained on Winterbottom at the very end of the race, with the two coming even closer when the Ford driver lost valuable time when being passed by Aaren Russell who was a lap behind.

The two came close, but not close enough and had to settle for second and third place respectively, below one second behind Winterbottom.

Shane van Gisbergen crossed the line in fourth position ahead of Nissan Motorsport driver Rick Kelly and Prodrive Racing Australia driver Chaz Mostert in sixth.

The Holden Racing Team duo of Garth Tander and James Caruso rounded off the top eight, with multiple champion Jamie Whincup only managing eleventh position due to a different three-stop strategy.
