Davit Kajaia OK after fast crash in the wet at the Salzburgring
Liqui Moly Team Engstler driver Davit Kajaia was OK after a heavy crash in the second race at the Salzburgring, which eliminated the Georgian from a potential second position.
Kajaia’s Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR lost control on the way into the first corner chicane at the start of lap eight, collected the tyre bundle on the entry to the corner, and careered off through the gravel trap into the barriers, but emerged shaken but uninjured after the incident.
“(It was) aquaplaning,” said Kajaia to TouringCarTimes. “When I started to brake, there was a lot of water and my engine just cut-off, and I just went straight on.”
Volkswagen was on target to lockout the top three spots ahead of Kajaia’s crash, with the Golf GTIs of the Engstler team and Leopard Racing favouring the wet conditions, with Kajaia at that point separating the two Leopard VWs of Jean-Karl Vernay and Stefano Comini.
“We suffered with the top speed here, but the wet equalised the difference between the other cars,” he added.
