Mat’o Homola apologises for Lisboa mistake

Mat’o Homola was the accidental protagonist of the Macau TCR International Series finale, as the B3 Racing driver made contact with championship leader James Nash, after which the Brit’s chances of clinching the title were much slimmer.

The Slovakian tells the tale.

“After Mandarin I saw Nash was on the inside for Lisboa, with (Pepe) Oriola right behind him”, said Homola to TouringCarTimes. “I didn’t know what to do, I just wanted to use the slipstream from Borkovic, then I tried to overtake on the outside, or at least not to lose any positions. I then realised there was no space for both cars, but at that point I had no way to go.”

Homola apologised for the mistake, saying he was just trying to get further up the order.

“I took a risk and I’m sorry about what happened, but I had no intention to interfere in the championship or spoil the race for James, it was just a bad coincidence. I was just fighting to be as high up as possible.”

Homola attributes the mistake to his lack of experience at the Circuito da Guia.

“I think it’s also about my inexperience in Macau, I will learn from the mistakes. I do apologise to James and to all the drivers who were stuck in the pileup behind me. I just didn’t want to give up my position, the only real alternative there was to stop, and as a driver you don’t really do that. I tried to leave some space for James at the apex, stay on the left as much as I could, but it was not enough. I haven’t seen the video yet, so all I can say is I’m sorry for the drivers involved.”
