Rob Huff happy with result as he plays rearguard for Vernay at Spa

Rob Huff finished sixth in his third TCR International Series race, and his first with Team WRT at Spa, working with team-mate Jean-Karl Vernay and holding off a rabble of chasing cars including Edouard Mondron’s Volkswagen and Tom Coronel’s Honda.

Huff effectively dropped one spot as the Honda of Attila Tassi leaped past the top five cars and into the lead, and found himself behind team-mate Vernay during the early stages, both bottled up behind Frédéric Vervisch’s Audi RS 3 LMS.

“I didn’t have a great start, but my main goal is to look after Jean-Karl and to allow him to attack as I held everyone off, and it worked really well,” said Huff to TouringCarTimes.

“I had a few opportunities where if it was someone else in front, for sure I’d overtake. It was tough, as Vervisch was very slow and holding all of us up, so I had to keep back from JK to allow him to attack, but also hold off three other cars behind me.”

Vernay eventually passed Vervisch on lap five and set about chasing the top three, while Huff continued to fight the Belgian for position, while defending against the Volkswagen of Edouard Mondron.

“The Audi’s so strong on the straights we had no chance to get past, but our car was still really good and really strong,” he said. “That’s hopefully what I’m bringing to the team, as we’re now running as set up on the car which is completely different to that which the team have run in the past. We were really strong in qualifying and the race at a circuit where we thought we’d struggle.”
