Stefano Comini delighted to give Audi their first International Series win
2015 and 2016 champion Stefano Comini scored his first win of the season at Spa-Francorchamps, rocketing to second in the drivers’ standings, and taking the first win for a TCR-specification Audi Sport customer racing car in the TCR International Series.
The Swiss driver, who won both his sprint race heats at Spa two weeks’ ago in the TCR Benelux series, made it three-from-three, despite dropping two spots at the start to the Hondas of Attila Tassi and Benjamin Lessennes.
“The car was amazing,” said Comini to TouringCarTimes. “I suffered with my tyres at the end of the race, as early on I wanted to create a gap, but the car was really good, and let me go really fast in Eau Rouge and to do Blanchimont flat out.”
Comini fell behind Tassi’s M1RA Honda and the Boutsen Ginion Civic of Lessennes at the start as the two Hondas swarmed the front-row sitting Comtoyou Racing Audis into La Source.
“My start was shit, and the Hondas’ were amazing,” said Comini. “But I knew that at Eau Rouge I could make up the difference, and it allowed me to overtake Lessennes, and then after I attacked Attila. At Eau Rouge he made a little mistake, and I overtook him quite easily, which gave me my opportunity to push and build my lead.
“I’m very happy to give Audi in the same day their first pole position in the International Series and the first victory, and very happy to get my third victory with Comtoyou and our first in the International.”
Comini’s results move him to joint-second in the drivers’ standings, 15 points behind points leader Jean-Karl Vernay in the Team WRT Volkswagen.
