Jean-Karl Vernay on P2: “It’s great for the team” after Salzburg disaster
Team WRT has said it’s great to have secured the front row for the first race tomorrow at the Hungaroring, after qualifying second in the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, which was heavily damaged six days ago at the Salzburgring.
Vernay, who is still struggling with bruising after the crash, said to qualify second is a great achievement, and targets getting back into the championship figth after M1RA’s Roberto Colciago and Comtoyou Racing’s Stefano Comini jumped ahead of him in the points in Austria.
“It was tough in the car, but I’m motivated after what happened, so I did this for the boys,” said Vernay to TouringCarTimes.
“I want to get back in the championship, and I’m now focussed on the start, I know the Hondas have really good traction control so it’s going to be tough, so even if I finish top five I’ll be happy with that, but for sure I’m going to try to win.”
Although Vernay qualified second, he was also frustrated after losing time on his best lap behind the Honda of Colciago and the SEAT of Pepe Oriola.
“We could have done slightly better,” he explained.
“It was a mess between Pepe Oriola and Roberto Colciago. When I arrived, Pepe went on the side to not block me, but then Colciago blocked me. Maybe he didn’t do it on purpose, but Tony (Whitaker, race director) said this would really be observed, and this messed up my lap, so I hope the stewards take care about this blocking.”
