Norbert Michelisz hails amazing day in Hungary, aims to help team-mates on Sunday

Norbert Michelisz has said he’s delighted to score pole position in front of his home crowd at the Hungaroring, but hopes to be able to help his drivers and team-mates tomorrow, with Attila Tassi third on the grid behind him.

The Hungarian has topped every session so far this weekend, and took pole by six-tenths of a second ahead of the Team WRT Volkswagen of Jean-Karl Vernay, who lost time on his final lap behind the SEAT of Pepe Oriola and the Honda of Roberto Colciago.

Michelisz has said the weekend has been an experience so far, racing with his own team for the first time.

“It’s an amazing day,” said Michelisz.

“I’d like to thank the team, as since the first laps the car was working perfectly. It’s also quite emotional for me not only to race in front of my home people, but also to do that with my own team.

“The first few laps yesterday in FP1 were a bit emotional for me – it’s a beautiful experience – I’d like to thank all the people who have helped us on our way so far, I’m really proud of the guys, so if I can give them something back then I’m really happy to do that.”

While Michelisz starts on pole, his team-mates Attila Tassi and Roberto Colciago will start third and sixth, with both in hot contention for the title, and with fellow Hungarian Tassi also chasing his first win after a few missed opportunities earlier this season.

Michelisz says his main focus is to help the team, then chase glory himself on race day.

“The most important thing is to have good results for Attila and Roberto,” he said. “It’s always nice to be on the podium in front of the crowd. Of course, I’ll be a good sportsman tomorrow, so it’s not about messing with the others, but if I’m in a position tomorrow to help Attila, I’m really happy to do that. He’s showed great performance throughout the year, and I know what a nice feeling it is to win in front of these people.”
