Garth Tander wants split qualifying in Supercars

Garth Tander has called for the Supercars Championship’s qualifying to be split into two sessions after the recent issues of slow traffic hindering drivers during their fast laps.

”I think tracks under a certain size, like Perth, Symmons Plains, here (Ipswich) and maybe a couple of others, we should split qualifying up. We used to run two qualifying sessions. That’s it. Job done,” said Tander to Inside Supercars.

Championship leader Scott McLaughlin also ran into traffic during one of his fast laps during qualifying, although something his engineer Ludo Lacroix took the blame for.

“I blame myself for putting him in that position,” said Lacroix.

“It is very difficult for us in the middle of the pitlane to get a clean track. There’s always somebody at the front and somebody at the back. We tried something (going out early). We need to make sure that the teams are doing the right thing, talking to their drivers, and most of them do it. I think we need to self-regulate.”

Three drivers were penalised for hindering other drivers during qualifying during the race weekend at Queensland Raceway. There is no official word yet from the organisers whether split qualifying sessions will be considered.
