Colin Turkington vows to “reset and go again” on Finals Day

Colin Turkington says he will “reset and go again” at Brands Hatch after seeing his chances of heading into Finals Day as the BTCC points leader take a hit in race three at Silverstone.

A penalty for title rival Ash Sutton that saw him put to the back of the grid meant the Team BMW driver went into the final race of the weekend in a position to try and overhaul his rival in the standings.

However, contact at Brooklands on lap one would see him slip back down the order and left him in the wrong place on track when Josh Cook and Jason Plato tangled ahead; the Northern Irishman being left with nowhere to go when cars anchored up and being forced to pit with damage to the front end.

Although he rejoined a lap down, Turkington would fail to score whilst Sutton raced through to eleventh spot to give him a ten point lead going into the last meeting of the campaign, with the pair well clear of Gordon Shedden and Tom Ingram who retain the slenderest of mathematical chances.

“I’d have said we did better than we expected in the opening two races considering the ballast on the car and the fact that this isn’t a rear-wheel drive circuit,” he said. “To get a third and a fourth was good and it’s frustrating that we didn’t get anything from race three as the luck didn’t go our way.

“From the start, it looked okay until I got tagged at Brooklands which put me sideways and then back into the pack; which meant I was in the wrong place at Luffield when there was an accident ahead.

“We got back out for some manufacturer points but the game was over for me; I couldn’t have done anything different. We’d worked so hard to claw back points in the first two races and in the end, have only managed to reduce it by two.

“I have to reset and go again at Brands Hatch. I’ll have less weight than Ash and will keep my head down and see what we can do.”
