Jonathon Webb fined for the massive crash with Todd Hazelwood
Tekno Autosport’s Jonathon Webb has been given a 15 000 AUD fine for triggering the massive crash of Todd Hazelwood in the first qualifying race of the Supercars Championship Sandown 500 endurance race.
The two made contact in Turn 6, sending the Brad Jones Racing driver off track at 260 km/h, a crash he fortunately walked away from unhurt.
The Supercars Championship stewards confirmed that Webb has admitted to reckless driving, with the following statement:
“Following a DRD investigation and an admission of Reckless Driving by Car #19, Jonathon Webb (making contact with Car #4, Todd Hazelwood at Turn 6), the Stewards imposed a penalty of a fine of $15,000 ($7,500 suspended until 31 December 2017) on Jonathon Webb.”
Webb, who is owner of team Tekno Autosports, accepted the fine:
“I thought they were pretty fair and reasonable. I was in a catch-22. As a driver I wanted as little (a penalty) as possible but from a team owner’s point of view having consistency is what we’ve been working on with the stewards,” said Webb to supercars.com.
“Obviously no one loves a penalty but I can see their logic and see the consistency with what they’ve done in the year. It’s going to be what it’s going to be I guess.”
Another driver to also be penalised was Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Shane van Gisbergen for turning around DJR Team Penske driver Fabian Coulthard in the main race of the weekend.
“Following a DRD investigation and an admission of Careless Driving by Car #97, Shane van Gisbergen (making contact with Car #12, Fabian Coulthard, at Turn 12 and causing it to spin), the Stewards imposed a penalty of the Loss of 2 Grid Spots for Car #97, Shane van Gisbergen/Matt Campbell in Race 19.”
