Shane van Gisbergen shines in race two to win from second on the grid

Shane van Gisbergen won the second Supercars championship race of the weekend at Queensland Raceway, beating title rival and championship leader Scott McLaughlin who finished second.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver made a lightning start from second place on the grid and kept the race under control from there, although losing some time during the stops. The Kiwi won the race by over two seconds despite the DJR Team Penske rival getting closer in the final part of the race.

Chaz Mostert claimed the final podium position for Tickford Racing, his first of 2018, and came under pressure from Jamie Whincup towards the end of the race. A mere 0.1102 seconds separated the two over the finishing line.

The opening lap of the race saw a three-car incident between Walkinshaw Andretti United drivers Scott Pye and James Courtney, as well as Mark Winterbottom.

Pye was able to continue while Winterbottom and Courtney were forced to pit for repairs and the incident will be investigated after the race, with Courtney left fuming over his team-mate.

Fabian Coulthard finished fifth for DJR Team Penske ahead of Brad Jones Racing driver Tim Slade. Erebus Motorsport’s David Reynolds and Triple Eight’s Craig Lowndes, who finished on the podium yesterday, rounded off the top eight.

McLaughlin continues on top of the points table, 131 points ahead of van Gisbergen and 451 points ahead of Whincup.

The next race is the SuperNight event on August 3-4th at Sydney Motorsport Park.
