Dan Cammish delighted by maiden pole position

Dan Cammish admitted he was delighted to secure his maiden pole position after an impressive performance in qualifying at Knockhill.

The Honda driver emerged ahead of the fancied BMWs to snare top spot ahead of round eight of the season, edging Stephen Jelley out of what would have been a surprise pole for Team Parker.

It was a result that left the former Porsche champion understandably pleased, having missed out on a potentially taking pole on a number of times earlier in the season.

“It’s always tough as this grid is split by nothing,” he told TouringCarTimes, “and even when you deliver an incredible lap you can sometimes end up with p5 or P6. Losing the pole at Brands Hatch at the start of the year was hard to swallow and I think I have chased it too hard since then and have sometimes been guilty of trying to get more than was possible.

“After Fp2 I was confident about our chances and managed to find something else in qualifying. I saw the time coming through sector two was good and then I threw it into final corner and got it stopped, booted the throttle and then hoped it was enough. It was so close but I’m delighted to get pole.

“Will I lead into turn one tomorrow with three BMWs behind? That’s another story so I’ll enjoy tonight and tomorrow is another day.”

Cammish admitted that he had been guilty of putting himself under undue pressure during his debut season to date, and said he felt the pole was a result of adopting a different mindset.

“I took a look at myself after Rockingham and thought I wasn’t someone I wanted to be,” he said. “Maybe I was putting too much pressure on myself and then not getting the best from the car as a result.

“I kept missing that last little bit and was also stuck in the Porsche mindset where you know the best driver gets pole. It’s not always the same here with different cars suiting different circuits and you have to look at the bigger picture and realise sometimes that to be P7 or P8 is a good result. I’ve come here feeling happy and confident and pole is the reward.”
