Scott McLaughlin on maiden Supercars title: “The longest laps of my life”

Scott McLaughlin claimed his maiden Supercars championship title in the 2018 season finale in Newcastle and the 25-year-old was over the moon.

“Holy smokes, I just can’t believe we’ve done it. Holy guacamole,” said McLaughlin.

“Everyone here work so hard. With 30 to go I thought ‘this could be on’ and it was the longest 30 laps of my life.”

The DJR Team Penske driver claimed the title with a 71-point margin over main rival Shane van Gisbergen following a controversial penalty in the penultimate race.

“We have to pay respect to Shane, we raced so hard all year, it’s been a hell of a battle,” said McLaughlin.

McLaughlin made his full season Supercars championship debut in 2013 for Garry Rogers Motorsport before joining DJR Team Penske last year, finishing as the 2017 runner-up.
