Supercars race director to miss Sydney weekend

Supercars Championship race director Tim Schenken will miss this weekend’s event in Sydney after being unable to make the trip from Victoria.

Schenken was unable to secure exemption from the New South Wales government to make the trip after the border between the states was closed as a result of COVID-19, with Victoria-based teams and officials having been forced to travel early before the closure came into effect.

With Schenken unable to travel early and now refused an exemption, deputy race director James Taylor will take up the senior position for the weekend.

“Tim is certainly a very important part of Supercars’ events, however given the current COVID-19 restrictions he has been unable to travel to Sydney,” Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said. “In addition the requirements around self-isolation, without an exemption, would have made it in impractical for Tim to attend.

“While this year has certainly been unique and challenging, we always have plans in place should certain personnel not be available and we’ve quickly enacted these plans with as little disruption as possible.

“We know James, along with all those in race control, and the many volunteer officials around the circuit, will do a fantastic job this weekend.”
