Darwin doubleheader coming up for Supercars

Supercars will race in Darwin on back-to-back weekends next month, an announcement that was made during this weekend’s second Sydney round in a row.

As the championship continues to evolve with Australian border restrictions tightening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, flexibility has been key for the series moving forwards and the second Darwin round has been a late addition.

It was announced earlier this week that all teams would temporarily relocate to south-east Queensland as the Northern Territory government closes their borders to travellers from Sydney, forcing the hand of Supercars to commit to their Darwin trip, now doubling down with back-to-back race weekends.

The scheduled Darwin Triple Crown on August 8-9 will be joined by the Darwin SuperSprint only a few days later and Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said the Northern Territory government is a big reason why the rounds can go ahead.

“We’re thrilled to have locked in this double-header with the Northern Territory Government for two weeks of racing in August,” Seamer said.

“I would like to thank Chief Minister Gunner and NT Health for working with Supercars on this concept, which allows for us to make the most out of our key northern legs of this year’s championship.”

“Darwin is such a special event for the championship and a real favourite of the teams, drivers and fans.”

Both events will allow crowds of up to 4500 people a day with those who have purchased tickets to the first round being offered an upgrade to the second as well.
