Dan Cammish: “Victory the ideal way to kick off the season”
Dan Cammish insisted that a victory in the opening race of the new BTCC season was the ideal way in which to rebound from the disappointment of the 2019 finale.
The Honda driver heads into 2020 looking to challenge for the championship title after missing out on the crown last year on the penultimate lap of the campaign, and made the perfect start to his challenge when he secured victory in race one.
Having qualified on the front row, Cammish was able to nip ahead of the squabbling pair of Colin Turkington and Ash Sutton when they clashed at McLeans and then held station at the front to secure victory in the only race of the year not affected by championship ballast.
With additional weight in the car, Cammish had to settle for sixth and seventh in the remaining races but now heads for Brands Hatch next weekend sitting second in the standings; just six points down on early leader Turkington.
“It’s been a good weekend, and to bounce back from so long dwelling on last year with a front row start in qualifying was good,” he said. “I lost out at the start like I predicted I would, but did a good job to be in right place when it mattered to move into the lead, and to get the first win of the year is nice.
“We took a step back with the weight in the car which I think is partly down to set-up in the car and partly down to me; I’m certainly not blameless as I think there are tracks that suit me and how I drive the car more than others. People like Butcher and Ingram had more than me with the weight onboard but that is fine; it happens.
“What we’ve seen is that Colin was strong and the Infiniti is clearly a quick package so it’s going to be a tough year once again, but we’ll put our heads together and work hard to make sure we come out fighting next weekend at Brands Hatch.”
