Brodie Kostecki on paying Erebus faith back with maiden podium finish

Supercars Championship rookie Brodie Kostecki was able to take his first ever main game podium finish in yesterday’s closing race at the Sandown SuperSprint, mastering the wet conditions to finish only behind title favourite and rainmaster Shane van Gisbergen.

Despite having main game starts as a wildcard and co-driver over the past two seasons, Kostecki stepped up to the plate this year as one of the two new drivers at Erebus Motorsport alongside 2019 Super2 Champion Will Brown following the departure of David Reynolds and Anton de Pasquale.

Though 2020 saw mixed results for the team and a fractured environment behind the scenes, the #99 car’s driver silenced their critics on Sunday when he finished well clear of third-placed Reynolds in conditions which caught some of the more experienced drivers out.

Buoyed by the result which propelled him to tenth in the standings, Kostecki says the aim is now to push harder to ensure the team keeps experiencing success which is something he and Brown can work together on achieving.

“Now we’ve had a taste of champagne, I think we need to push harder throughout the rest of the year and get some more of it,” he said.

“Learning from each other is the only way to go about both being rookies.

“He’s going to do some things better than I can and I’ll do somethings better than he can, so if we can combine the two together it helps the greater good.”

“George (Commins, engineer) and I get along really well. I made him cry after the race, so I have one up on him at the moment.”

Kostecki has ruled out a move to Triple Eight next year to take the soon-to-be-vacant seat of seven-time champion Jamie Whincup, saying he’d rather stay with the team which has given him a crack in the main game.

“I’ve got both hands down. Someone else can have a crack.”

He now sits in tenth in the championship standings with 313 points, leading the charge for Erebus who are eighth out of 13 in the team’s title race.
