Cameron Waters beats Will Davison to Symmons Plains pole position
Tickford Racing driver Cameron Waters claimed pole position in a close Supercars Championship qualifying session at Symmons Plains, beating Will Davison by 0.027 seconds to make it an all Ford Mustang front row.
“That was out of nowhere, that was really weird,” a shocked Waters said.
“I was a bit surprised. The guys have done a fantastic job, the car was pretty ordinary in Practice 2. Massive thanks to my team… we didn’t have tyre life last year. I hope we’ve learned a few things, it’s nice on its tyres and we can get a trophy today.”
Broc Freeney impressed to claim third spot on the grid ahead of Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki in fourth.
Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen, who is currently placed third overall, claimed fifth on the grid ahead of James Courtney and Andre Heimgartner while Scott Pye rounded off the top eight.
Points leader Chaz Mostert could only manage 13th position after fighting a power steering issue, with title rival Anton De Pasquale right ahead of him in 12th.
The first race of the weekend starts at 16:55 local time/06:55 CET.
