Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez sample Supercars at Albert Park

Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez have both had the opportunity to sample a Supercar for the first time ahead of the Australian Grand Prix this weekend at Albert Park

Following the opening two Supercars qualifying sessions of the weekend, the pair hit the track for a number of specially arranged demonstration laps before their own racing activities get underway on Friday.

Alonso headed out on track in Thomas Randle’s Tickford Racing Ford Mustang, with the Spaniard admitting it had been an enjoyable experience.

“It’s between a GT3 and a NASCAR,” the Alpine driver said. “It’s heavier and softer on the corners, but then you feel the power, the V8… the noise is amazing.

“It’s good fun, because the cars are very similar to each other on the grid. I tried to behave and take care of the car, to make sure he [Randle] is happy.”

Red Bull Racing ace Perez meanwhile climbed aboard Broc Feeney’s Triple Eight-run Holden Commodore for his own turn on track, and was also left smiling afterwards.

“The braking was the biggest challenge,” he said. “The braking efficiency, co-ordinating the corners is quite different.

“But it’s really good fun; the amount of kerb you’re able to take, you’re limited with that in F1. I was able to use the whole track.”
