Shane van Gisbergen charges to Townsville Race 1 win

Shane van Gisbergen charged to win the first Supercars Championship race of the weekend at Townsville, beating the fast starting Will Davison.

Dick Johnson Racing driver Davison beat Triple Eight driver van Gisbergen in the sprint to the first corner to grab the lead.

Different tyre strategies saw both Davison and van Gisbergen dropping positions, but ultimately climbing back to the front thanks to running hard tyre compounds early on.

Points leader van Gisbergen, later equipped with super softs, chased down Davison to overtake him on lap 83 of 88 to win the race by a full five seconds.

Cameron Waters crossed the finishing line in third after overtaking Andre Heimgartner, who had to settle for fourth, close to the end of the race.

Scott Pye was fifth for Team 18 while Davison’s team-mate Anton de Pasquale rounded off the top six.

The next race is scheduled for 14:45 local time/06:45 CEST tomorrow.
