Andre Heimgartner fastest in first official Gen3 test at Sydney Motorsport Park

Andre Heimgartner topped the first official Gen3 Supercars Championship pre-season test at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The Brad Jones Racing driver lapped the Australian circuit in 1:26.6787 behind the wheel of his all-new Chevrolet Camaro, beating Erebus Motorsport driver Will Brown by just 0.0157 seconds.

Brown’s team-mate Brodie Kostecki was third fastest, 0.1064 seconds from the top time, while Brad Jones Racing driver Macauley Jones was fourth fastest, three tenths behind.

The Chevrolet teams dominated the session, with the top eight places being occupied by Camaro drivers.

Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen was seventh fastest for Triple Eight Race Engineering, just below half a second quicker than Mark Winterbottom of Team 18.

Todd Hazelwood was fastest of the Ford Mustang drivers in ninth position, over a second from Heimgartners fastest time.

The second fastest Mustang driver was Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Chaz Mostert in 13th position, 1.4153 seconds from the top time.

The red flags were brought out with 15 minutes left of the session at Nick Percat came to a half on track due to a technical issue with his Walkinshaw Andretti United prepared Mustang.
