Volt claims pole in 40-car field at Monza as points leader Girolami is penalised

Aikoa Racing driver Franco Girolami (Audi) was fastest of all during TCR Italy qualifying at Monza, heading a massive TCR Italy grid of 40 cars.

But the championship leader will start from third as he carries a two-place grid drop penalty from the previous race weekend.

This means that Honda driver Ruben Volt, who was 0.107 seconds slower than Girolami, will start from pole position ahead of Felice Jelmini (Audi), who is placed second overall.

The session was red flagged early on when Cesare Bursa went off at the Parabolica, with the field having 15 minutes left on the clock when the green flag was shown again.

Niels Langeveld put his MM Motorsport prepared Honda Civic Type R TCR in fourth position on the grid, three tenths from pole.

Aurelien Comte, who is placed third overall, was fifth fastest for SP Competition while Marco Butti of Target Competition rounded off top six, seven tenths slower than Girolami.

The first race of the weekend starts at 12:50 CEST on Saturday.
