Colin Turkington happy with second row start

Colin Turkington has said he was happy to secure a second row start for the opening round of the British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park.

The Team BMW driver proved to be the closest challenger to Tom Ingram and Ash Sutton in what was a frenetic qualifying session, which was running under the new-for-2024 ‘Quick Six’ format.

“It was really exciting and I think the weather really threw a curveball into Q1,” said Turkington. “Arguably the second group that I was in it was a bit clearer. It was all about finding the balance on pushing but not overdoing it because you can’t afford to make a mistake out there and avoid not progressing.

“I’m really happy with the finishing position and its the usual suspects that are in front of me again. The car felt good and we’re at the right end of the grid but ultimately we’re a few tenths shy of pole; it is what it is though.”

Turning his attention to the prospect of a wet race day at the Leicestershire venue, the BMW 330e M Sport driver is remaining open-minded at what lies ahead.

“It will be what it will be,” he said. “It was pretty much the same last year at the season-opener so we will just adapt to the conditions and see what we can do. It’s obviously not going to be easy!”

Race one is scheduled to get underway at 11:30.
