V8 Supercars confirms 2015 calendar

The 2015 calendar has been confirmed by the V8 Supercars organisation with no major changes compared with 2014.

The season starts with the official pre-season test day at Sydney Motorsport Park, clashing with the 12 Hours of Bathurst race, which features a fan track walk, livery reveal and a shootout session which will be telivized live.

“It is a grand season opening launch, the style of which has never been seen in our sport. It’s about giving the teams more time for the most important test of the year and at the same time allowing maximum interaction and engagement with fans,” said V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton.

The changes to the calendar includes the Auckland race being moved from April to November, a change affecting the Barbagallo Raceway and Winton Motor Raceway events.

Some changes have been made to the format of a number of race weekends, with Townsville returning to its original 200 km race format and Auckland returning to the SuperSprint format. The Clipsal 500 and Sydney 500 will retain the 2×125 km format on the Saturday as day-time races.

“Our research shows that the existing formats have been highly successful. The emphasis was on improving the racing product, and giving drivers the opportunity to attack at all times without external factors preventing them from being aggressive,” said Warburton.

Another change is that the SuperSprint races will feature 120 minutes of Friday testing to incorporate team testing.

“It made sense that instead of testing away from the fans to combine Friday practice and allow teams the ability to adopt testing procedures as required. That achieves two key objectives: more V8 Supercars on track for the fans and reducing the high costs to teams of testing away from race meetings,” said Warburton.
