2016 V8 Supercars calendar gaps to be reduced

The V8 Supercars organisation has announced their plans to compact the gaps in the calendar for the 2016 season.

“I have been very clear that we are always going to start in Adelaide and try and get as much rhythm in the season as we can, racing roughly every two weeks. Then we would have a winter break of between four and six weeks and then come back to Darwin,” said James Warburton, V8 Supercars CEO, to the official championship site.

The current calendar has got several gaps of five weeks between races, something that will be changed for 2016.

While the ambition of the organisers is to hold a race every two weeks, there will be exceptions other than the mid-winter break. This is mainly due to logistical reasons, such as the sheer distance to the Darwin and Perth races for example.

Another change to the calendar is the addition of the Kuala Lumpur City Grand Prix, scheduled for early August. The championship organisers have emphasised that this race is not going to replace an Australian round, but that there are some contracts for domestic rounds still to be finalised.

The contract for the race in Perth is under negotiation and the Australian Grand Prix race could become part of the championship in terms of points.

“We’d love for the Australian Grand Prix to tweak that format and become a round of the Championship. But that is not in our hands; that is up to the Australian Grand Prix Commission. We have certainly ticked every box and now it is up to them to decide. We’ll just keep pushing forward,” said Warburton.

The 2016 calendar will be revealed in September.
