Qualifying postponed at Bathurst following heavy crash for Chaz Mostert (updated)

Qualifying for the 2015 Bathurst 1000 has been red flagged, with the officials confirming no further track activity will take place today following a major crash for last year’s winner Chaz Mostert at the start of the session.

Mostert crashed out at Forrest’s Elbow on his first flying lap, clipping the wall on the way into the turn which bounced him out to the right-hand side of the track and then back across to the left, where he slammed into the concrete wall at the marshal’s post, almost rolling the Ford Falcon FG X.

The car ground to a halt with significant damage to the left-hand side of the car. Mostert was then taken to the medical centre, and has been confirmed to have a fractured left wrist and femur, ruling him out for the rest of the weekend and potentially the rest of the season.

The marshals at the post flung themselves out of the way as the car careered into the wall. Four have minor injuries, while a fifth marshal is more severely injured. He’s been taken to Bathurst hospital by road in a stable condition with a chest injury.

With the marshal’s post severely damaged, all remaining track activity has been cancelled for today with details on whether it will be rescheduled, or if practice results will be used instead to be confirmed by the organisers.

Tomorrow’s timetable has a 45-minute sixth practice session scheduled for 10:15 AEST, with the top ten pole position shootout due at 17:10.
