Shane van Gisbergen wins 2016 Bathurst 12 Hours

Shane van Gisbergen claimed victory in style of the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hours with co-drivers Alvaro Parente and Jonathon Webb for Tekno Autosports in a McLaren 650S. The trio beat Nissan Motorsport drivers Rick Kelly, Katsumasa Chiyo and Florian Strauss by a mere 1.3 seconds.

Van Gisbergen started the race from pole and set a blistering pace, beating the lap record before pitting for their first stop.

The Tekno Autosports McLaren team clearly had the pace on the field but had two major setbacks during the race. The first came as Van Gisbergen received a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pits and the second came when Parente drove and had to stop for a full 40 seconds on track to reset the electrical system.

The issues handed the lead to the Nissan Motorsport trio who had fought hard to get up through the field from a disappointing 13th position on the grid.

The McLaren trio were able to gain back the lost ground thanks to a safety car session, getting back into a lead they were never to lose.

Bentley claimed third position in the race with drivers Steven Kane, Matt Bell and Guy Smith, crossing the finishing line 49 seconds behind the winners after having tyre issues throughout the race.

Audi team Phoenix Racing claimed fourth position with drivers Laurens Vanthoor, Markus Winkelhock and Alex Davison. The Audi trio were over a minute behind the leaders and complained over the lack of straight line speed during the race.

V8 Supercars team Erebus Motorsport rounded off the top five in their Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 with drivers David Reynolds, Nico Bastian and Thomas Jäger.

Other V8 Supercars drivers in the race included Garth Tander finishing eighth and Will Davison ninth, with endurance co-driver Luke Youlden rounding off the top ten.

Volvo Polestar Racing driver Scott McLaughlin claimed Class B victory in a Porsche 911 for Grove Racing, crossing the line in 12th position overall.
